Social Action
We encourage all of our members to become involved in at least one of our many social action opportunities, performing community service for others and caring for our fellow congregants.
Sunday Supper
Join us for a perfect interfaith mitzvah project! One Sunday a month, CBI volunteers cook and serve a hot meal to our unhoused neighbors at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, (1221 Wass Street, Tustin, CA 92780) at 4pm. All are welcome. Contact the CBI Office to be added to the volunteer email list and receive information and updates.
This program started in July 2010 and is an interfaith partnership, with the full participation of our neighbors: Aldersgate Methodist Church (Tustin), Trinity Episcopal Church (Orange), Tree of Life Community Church (Orange), and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (Tustin).
CBI is committed to cooking and serving on the second Sunday of most months. Sundays vary during February, March and December. Shifts usually run for two hours. We are also grateful for donations to purchase paper goods and food.
If you have physical gift cards you'd like to donate, you can mail them to:
Sandi Benson
2346 Dunes
Tustin, CA 92782
Digital cards can be sent to: 1sandib@gmail.com.
$10 gift cards to Subway, Trader Joe's, and grocery stores requested.
Blood Drives
CBI hosts Red Cross blood drives three times a year in the Social Hall - check your CBI emails for upcoming dates. We encourage those who are able to donate blood to give an hour of their time to save up to 3 lives. We also ask for a few volunteers the day of the drive. Watch for sign-ups to perform this life-saving mitzvah!
Hesed (Comfort) Committee
The Hesed committee is CBI's link to members who are experiencing times of sorrow and joy. Whether our congregants are in mourning, recovering from illness, or welcoming a new baby, the Hesed committee is there for them. Volunteers for the Hesed team reach out and let congregants know that the community cares about them. This committee also offers meals for congregants in need, Shabbat care packages after a loss, and new baby gifts to welcome our littlest CBI'ers. If you would like to join the Hesed team, please contact the CBI office.
Cooking for Comfort
We keep prepared meals in a dedicated CBI freezer for congregants who would like a meal in times of need. Congregants periodically get together to assemble ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat kosher meals to have on hand when needed. If interested in volunteering or you would like a meal for yourself or others, please contact the CBI office.
Family Promise
Family Promise of Orange County creates a pathway of support for families experiencing housing instability and insecurity. CBI provides dinners and comradery to families staying at their new Santa Ana static site.
Additionally, Family Promise opened a brand new 7 unit apartment building in October 2023 on El Camino Real and Browning Avenue in Tustin. CBI has the opportunity to support House of Ruth in many ways, including tutoring children, teaching budget/finance skills, cooking classes, reading, etc.
